Car driving fiends?

Having just read this article. Which states that,
"Nearly eight in 10 people (78 per cent) claim to be concerned about the environmental impact of their wheels, as transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in this country. But even when walking, biking or public transit are viable options for them, three-quarters of Canadians (75 per cent) will still choose to drive."
This worries me, as the Golden Active Transport Coordinator. I want to encourage people to leave the car at home and use other modes to get around town. So how can i do that, when people will use the car, even if it isn't the quickest way? Biking around town, in many cases is a few seconds slower, and sometimes faster than a car. Walking is a lovely way to appreciate where we live. It does not take as long as you think.  If you find that you can't complete the walk, just drop in on a friend for a coffee before starting off again. Most walks in town, would be around 30 mins to 45 mins at a medium pace.

This part of the article got me.

"In fact, Canadians tell WWF-Canada they'd sooner surrender junk food, credit cards, cellphones, coffee, Internet access and even sex before kissing their car keys goodbye."

Would you rather give up all that to drive a car? I wouldn't, i can't live without my morning coffee. One on the way to work, and the other at work.

So why not try walking or biking to work for a month, and see how good you feel in the morning. You will be more awake, and actually get something done in the mornings. The day will go faster, and if you walk on fridays, after work drinks don't become a problem. You just walk home, no need to worry about the car.
