As requirements, attitudes and perceptions change towards non motorized transport in our community, the question of creating a formalized advocacy coalition presents itself. Utilizing the mandates set forth by the BC Cycling Coalition and the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition (arguably the best cycling advocates in British Columbia) we would have much more clout when it comes to bargaining and approaching local and provincial government for public works projects. A coalition consisting of five or six key community members could offer input to our town council. At present, GAT is an informal group of community members seeking a positive change in community transportation. With the creation of a coalition, GAT would essentially become a not for profit society which could work along side the BC Cycling Coalition and other advocacy groups to create change.
With objectives such as a commuter trail from Nicholson to Golden, safe cycling access from Pine Drive into downtown Golden, the creation of community cycling lanes and even a community bike share program there needs to be a representative body that will manage these projects and ensure that they are brought to fruition.
So...are there enough people in our community who actually give a crap about the rights of cyclists and pedestrians? That is still in contention.
